Nearly 700 officers broke up a protest camp of farmers at the Las Bambas mine site in the Apurímac region, police said Wednesday. The security forces fired tear gas into the crowd, and the occupants hurled stones at the officers, the radio station RPP reported.

Residents of neighbouring villages had occupied the mine on 16 April. - Shortly afterwards, the mine stopped production. Many farmers had sold land to the mine operator MMG Limited years ago. However, they now accuse the company of not having fulfilled its obligations, such as investing in infrastructure and education in the region. Las Bambas is one of the largest copper mines in the world. The open pit mine can produce 145 000 tonnes of copper per day.
