Subject: Mine accident at the Kostenko mine in Karaganda

Dear Sir or Madam,

We are horrified by the death of the 38 miners so far, as well as the many injured. At the same time, we feel anger and indignation that accidents like yesterday's at the Kostenko mine in Karaganda are still happening. This does not have to happen again in this day and age. There have long been experiences, methods and technical possibilities to protect the safety of the miners and also the people living around a mine from harm.

In the case of this accident, a network of fixed measuring devices underground for the early detection of fires and the binding or disposal of combustible dusts, as well as the avoidance of combustible operating materials where there are alternatives, would have prevented so many people from being harmed. It is above all their responsibility to ensure that the possible conditions are created in their company to avoid such accidents in the future.

The International Miners' Coordination demands that the accident be fully investigated and that those responsible be held accountable.
The medical care of the injured, as well as the care and compensation of the relatives, including those of the miners who were killed, at the expense of the company.

Yours sincerely

Andreas Tadysiak
Chief Coordinator of the International Miners Coordination
