Canada: Miners strike at nickel mine

630 miners at the Raglan Nickel and Copper Mine in Nunavik began a strike at the weekend. The mine is located on the Ungava Peninsula in the Arctic region of the Canadian province of Quebec. The miners of the USW union are fighting for better working conditions and higher wages.

They work 11 hours a day for 21 days. After that, a new shift begins. The miners are also striking against the use of temporary workers. One of the world's largest mining companies, Glencore, owns the mine. A total of 1,200 people work at the Raglan mine, many of them in temporary employment agencies.
